Rock Salt Winter Grit For Ice & Snow
Halite is the mineral form of sodium chloride (NaCl). It's commonly known as rock salt. Halite is often used both residentially and municipally for managing ice. This is because brine (a solution of water and salt) has a lower freezing point than ordinary water. By putting salt on ice will cause it to melt.It works by quickly de-icing the area surrounding your home or place of work in adverse weather conditions. It is common for people in winter to spread rock salt (also known as grit salt) on their walkways and driveways to melt ice and thin layers of snow. It is not necessary to use large amounts of concentrated rock salt to completely melt the ice. A small amount of the salt will weaken the ice so that it can be easily removed by other means. Also, many cities will spread a mixture of sand and rock salt on roads during and after snow and ice to improve traction.

As prevention is usually better than cure, you will be better keeping up to date with weather forecasts throughout the coldest months. If low temperatures are forecast then spreading some rock salt on your walkways and driveways would be beneficial to helping prevent the areas icing over. Another speading of salt in the morning can help ensure safety for you and your vistors. This is especially good if you live at the top (or bottom) of a steep path or drive. Even more so if steps or involved. Slipping or falling down is not only embarrassing but could be very painful and affect your health significantly. Back injuries and broken limbs can be prevented with just a bit of grit! If elderly people slip on ice then the problems can be even more serious so helping family and friends purchase a few bags of rock salt would be a good idea.
Not only your health can be preserved but your wealth too. A snowed in car sliding around on an icy driveway can easily bump into a gate post and dent your bodywork. A scattering of rock salt or the can cut down the chances of this happening considerably.
Bagged crushed rock salt for thawing ice and snow is ideal for gritting your path, driveway or road. A better option for paths and driveways would be to use white rock salt is it's 100% pure salt not mixed with anything else. With it being pure the white salt will not leave any residue after melting the ice or snow. This helps reduced the mess of people bringing the salt indoors on their footwear. For just a few pounds per 20kg bag of rock salt it can be a nice insurance against winter accidents. Obviously care always needs to taken regardless of spreading salt.
